The Organised Labour National May Day Planning Committee, planners of the Annual International Workers’ Day of Solidarity (May Day) celebration, has cancelled the 2020 May Day activities and celebration, amid the fight against the COVID-19.
The activities include the National May Day Parade in Accra and the parades in all the regional capitals.
The action is in compliance with the restriction on movement of persons in Accra and Kumasi and the ban on public gatherings nationwide, as part of measures to control the spread of the respiratory disease.
A statement signed by Dr Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, stated:
“We urge all workers to stay at home on May Day and continue to comply with all the relevant safety protocols in the fight against Coronavirus.
"We hope to resume the celebration of May Day in 2021”.
The Committee congratulated all health workers, utility workers, security agencies, and other essential service providers for their invaluable service to the nation in such a difficult time, when the nation was battling the pandemic.
