The Movement for Economic and Political Awareness (MEPA), a nongovernmental organisation (NGO) based in Kumasi has entreated Ghanaians to make Ghana the beacon of hope and encouragement to those nations in Africa and elsewhere still struggling to entrench democracy in their societies.
A statement issued in Kumasi on Tuesday and signed by El-Haj Abdul Wahab Shareef, Vice-Chairman of the movement, said the whole world would be keenly watching Ghanaians to deliver on their collective promise to hold free, fair, transparent and peaceful elections.
It recalled that when Ghana attained independence in 1957, she became the beacon of hope and encouragement for other African countries then still under the yoke of colonialism.
The statement said many of the leaders of these African countries visited Ghana to secure both moral and material support.
"Once again history has placed our country in a privileged position to demonstrate to her sister African countries and the world at large that the nurturing and attainment of matured democratic dispensation is not beyond the reach of African people, which can be accomplished without the usual unpalatable rancour and acrimony characteristic of the recent past of several African countries".
The movement asked Ghanaians to demonstrate that they were capable of holding free, fair, transparent and peaceful elections and called on all the political parties and their supporters to comport themselves to make the elections a resounding success.
