Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL) has launched its annual road safety campaign – “Twa Kwano Mmom” to wit “Go the distance instead,” a behavioral change programme aimed at reducing drink driving among commercial drivers.
A statement issued by the company said the campaign was in line with its ambition to create a positive role for alcohol in society and discourage drink-driving, especially among commercial drivers.
Mr Gavin Pike, the Managing Director of GGBL, speaking at the launch in Accra, said the campaign was borne out of five commitments made by Global Beer and Spirits Producers to reduce harmful drinking.
“One of those commitments is the need to reduce drinking and driving, which is at the heart of our responsible drinking campaigns,” he said. He said GGBL’s leadership in alcohol in society agenda, which was an integral part of its 2020 Sustainability and Responsibility Targets, seeks to create a positive role for alcohol through initiatives that reduced and tackled misuse.
Mr Gabriel Opoku-Asare, the Corporate Relations Director of GGBL, who explained the mechanics of the campaign, said over the next one month, education and breathalyzer tests would be conducted at major transport terminals and check points in Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast.
“To enhance enforcement, the MTTD together with the breathalyzer testing agency will be deployed to various points of the road plied by the drivers,” he said. Mr Opoku-Asare said randomly, drivers would be stopped and tested and a test showing below the limits of 0.08mg/l would be rewarded with a prize and the details of the driver put down and further monitored for rewards at the end of the campaign.
Mrs May Obiri-Yeaboah, the Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), commended GGBL for taking leadership as an alcohol producing company in the area of road safety.
“Over the last few years, we have witnessed your commitment towards ensuring our roads are safe during the festive season. It has been a great intervention in the effort to guarantee safety on Ghanaian roads,” she said.
Mr. George Ackom, the Director of Vehicle Registration and Inspection at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, urged commercial drivers to drive with care and be watchful on the road, as their license could be revoked in the event of any acts of irresponsible driving.
This year, the Twa Kwano Mmom Campaign is targeting 6000 commercial drivers and will focus on reaching them with the education against drunk-driving.
