Dr. Letsa who was inaugurating a newly constructed 38 bed mothers’ lodge, a refurbished theatre and 22- bed maternity ward for the Hospital, said the projects would lessen burden on tertiary health facilities and commended authorities of the Hospital for the foresight.

He said the Hospital’s upgrade was worthy of note having executed the projects from internal resources at a time most health facilities were grappling with slow and inadequate fund flows.

Dr Lawrence Kumi, the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, said the GHC 903,673.00 renovation was part of efforts to redeem the image of the facility, which was the oldest in the Region yet under resourced and had recently been labelled a deathbed for its maternal mortality rates.

He said the facility had received minimal infrastructural support since it was established 90 years ago with cracks ripping through the structures whiles insects overrun the theatre.

Dr Kumi said the roof of the labour ward was torn with clients clamouring in corridors and hallways for lack of space, a situation which necessitated the construction of the mothers’ lodge.

He said the lodging facility would afford clients on admission support of a resident caregiver for a minimal fee.  Dr Kumi said work on an emergency unit, would soon commence as second phase of the project and appealed to individuals and organizations to come to their aid.
