A total of 1097 farmers in the Ho Municipality have registered for government’s ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ initiative, Togbe Azadagli III, Ho Municipal Director of Agriculture has said.
Togbe Azadagli who was addressing this year’s Farmers Day celebration in Ho on the theme “Planting for Food and Jobs” said the provision of improved seeds, dedicated extension services, supply of fertilizer, digitized agricultural services and a wider market formed the pillars supporting the transformation of the economy.
He said in view of the above, 840 male and 257 female farmers in the Municipal area were given supplied with improved seeds and fertilizer to plant maize, cassava, rice and vegetable. Togbe Kwaku Ayim IV, Paramount Chief of Ziavi Traditional Area, suggested that schoolchildren at lower primary be engaged in the study of agriculture as done some years back to ‘catch them young.’
Mr. Nelson Akorli, Ho Municipal Chief Executive, said there was the need for the private sector to partner government to substantially invest in the agricultural sector. He said the Municipality was endowed with agricultural land and charged the youth to take advantage of government’s initiative to explore the sector.
Mr Prosper Adzato, 42, cereals and cocoa farmer was adjudged the overall Municipal Best Farmer.
