The goal of true education is said to be intelligence plus character. According to Albert Einstein, “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school”.
Senior High School (SHS) is a secondary level of education within the period of three years before completion.
As part of his campaign promises to Ghanaians during the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the then flag-bearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) made free education a key promise in his manifesto.
In his words, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stated in the 2016 manifesto, “I want a Ghana that has equal opportunities for all its citizens and provides quality education to ensure a skilled workforce that can compete in the globalized economy”.
“Yes, I am passionate about education because it is education that made me. The countries that have made rapid great strides in our time have relied on an educated and skilled population. Education is the anchor for all our plans and programs” he noted.
Free education by the NPP is targeted at students of public Senior High Schools as well as agricultural, vocational and technical institutions which will be funded by the government.
The NPP government has promised that, the free SHS education will commence for Junior High School (JHS) graduates who qualify for entry into SHS from the 2017/2018 academic year onwards.
The benefits, the government says, will be free tuition, free text books, free boarding and free meals. Day students are not left out. They will also enjoy free lunch.
Also, there will be no library fees, admission fees, science center fees, utility fees, computer lab fees and no examination fees.
