Doctor (Dr.) Quaye of the Faith Evangelical Mission Hospital, Accra, has advised the general public to abstain from using objects such as needles, feathers, keys, pen covers, et cetera, to remove ear wax from the ear.
This is because these objects are known to be potential causes of ear damage and can contract fungal or bacterial infections to the ears. Also, they tend to push the ear wax deeper into the inner ear canal.
She commented that cotton swabs are hygienic and ideal in the removal of ear wax unlike other objects.
She said that care must be taken when using cotton swabs because it could get stuck in the ears.
“Ear wax is a lubricant and a protector not dirt. Its removal is not medically encouraged”, Dr. Quaye expressed.
Persons with lesser ear wax may experience itchy ears due to dry ears.
Ear wax, also known as Cerumen, is a substance naturally produced by the outer ear. It is often considered by many people as dirt in the ear.
Individuals who care to get rid of ear wax from their ears make use of one or more of the objects mentioned above, among others.
Medically, ear wax protects foreign bodies such as insects from entering into the ear. It also fights against fungal infections as well as prevents the ears from drying out. Ear wax serves as a protector to trap dust and germs in the ears.
Dr. Quaye noted that, “in the case of individuals with hardened and impacted wax in their ears, it becomes a medical problem. For such persons, an ear wash-out is recommended for them”.
Impacted ear wax is a condition where the ear wax of a person is pushed too far into the inner ear in an effort to get rid of it. This causes pain, promotes infections and causes ringing in the ear.
However, it is not advisable for individuals to visit any Ear specialized hospital just to request for an ear wash-out. It must be prescribed by a medical practitioner, she remarked.
