Mr Prince Bagnaba-Mba, President of the Forum For National Equity, a civil society organisation, has suggested the need for all Ghanaians from 18 years and above to undergo compulsory military training.
He said training in good sanitary practices should also be key.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, he said the current national service was focused on graduates and not for the youth in general.
Mr Mba said the service should inculcate into the personnel knowledge about the 1992 Constitution, patriotism and national security awareness.
He noted that internal policing was very necessary so more emphasis should be laid on recruiting more police personnel rather than the military.
“Our external borders are secured and modern warfare is now technical and not about the mass movement of people,” he said.
Mr Mba called for the de-emphasis of the reference to the Head of State as the Commander-in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), since he was an Executive President with powers over all state entities.
He said the GAF should not been seen as a private body.
