The Madina 'Point 5' Residents Association has appealed to the Ga East Municipal Assembly to provide the community with potable water, toilet facilities, electricity and other social amenities to improve upon the living standards of the people
The association had also appealed to the Assembly to help protect lands earmarked for developmental projects which had been encroached upon by 'estate developers'
Mr. Prince Adu, Chairman of the Association, made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday.
He described as worrying the increasing rate at which lives and properties were being lost through the nefarious activities of thieves who
operated in the community.
Mr. Adu said the access road along the major storm-drain had been encroached upon by squatters.
"This problem arose when the new lorry station was relocated to the land on which was owned by the Volta River Authority.", he said adding;
these squatters have created permanent settlements for themselves thereby turning the area into a slum.
Mr. Adu said the slum had become a hiding place for criminals and a haven for sex workers.
Unauthorized structures are springing up indiscriminately all over the place which was becoming more or less Sodom and Gomorrah.
"There is no public place of convenience and as a result some of the residents had turned the major storm-drain into a place of convenience, thus
posing environmental hazards to the community", Mr. Adu added.
