Todd Phillips' Joker was a huge success, and Joaquin Phoenix will reprise the role that won him an Oscar in Joker: Folie à Deux. Warner Bros. has just revealed the first official poster for the upcoming DC Elseworlds film, which also stars Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.

Joker 2 Will Be a Musical

The first film premiered in 2019 and it was a huge success. The film took $335.4 at the domestic box office, but passed the $1 billion threshold internationally, with $728.6 from other markets. The film added $56.9 million from home market performance, which includes VOD, DVD, and Blu-Ray sales (via The Numbers).

The film holds a 69% rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The fans were even more excited about the DC Elseworlds film, as the movie has an 88% approval score from the audience. The film led to Joaquin Phoenix winning the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and the movie also took home the Original Score award, after scoring 11 Academy Award nominations.

Todd Phillips' Joker was originally meant to be a standalone, but its surprising critical reception led to a sequel. Warner Bros confirmed the sequel in Nov. 2019. The Joker sequel, officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux, will be a musical. Described as a "jukebox musical," the film following the famous villain will include recognizable songs that will be performed by the lead characters, Joker and Harley Quinn. There will also reportedly be at least 15 covers.

The upcoming sequel also has a bigger budget than the first. Given that the first film passed the $1 billion threshold, there is a lot of confidence in the upcoming sequel. Because of that, the DC Elseworlds is going all in. The first film had an estimated budget between $55 million to $70 million, but the new one will be massive, as it's expected to be around $200 million. Joaquin Phoenix's pay to reprise his role as Arthur Fleck/ the Joker is estimated at $20 million, with Lady Gaga getting $12 million to pay Harley Quinn.

Joker: Folie à Deux will be released in movie theaters on Oct. 4, 2024.
