MTN Ghana has continued its annual Christmas tradition of sharing joy and love with mothers and their newborns in hospitals across the country. Since 2011, the telecommunications giant has distributed over 3,500 hampers to mothers in hospitals on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. This year, according to the Senior Manager, Government and Regulatory Affairs at MTN Ghana, Mr Samuel Bartels, they had increased their hamper distribution to 600, an increase from last year's figure which was 500.
“In the Greater Accra Region, MTN Ghana is distributing 140 hampers to mothers at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The hampers, carefully selected to meet the needs of new mothers, contain essential items such as detergents, powder, lotions, cream, diapers, and more, Mr Bartels added.
He also commended the staff of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for their dedication and hardwork saying “People are home celebrating Christmas, but they are on their toes to ensure that the mothers that are here are able to birth their children safely and also to ensure that everything is okay. So, we celebrate the wonderful work that they do and everything we are doing here is just to complement the sacrifices that they have already made”.
The hamper distribution project, which takes place in all 16 regions of the country, he noted, aims to bring the spirit of Christmas to mothers and their babies in hospitals.
The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital's Senior Nursing Officer, Miss Victoria Djamo, expressed her gratitude to MTN Ghana for the generous donation. "We are so grateful for the 140 hampers filled with goodies, including diapers and baby essentials. These items will go a long way in helping the mothers, especially those who are in need and cannot afford to purchase these necessities."
According to Miss Djamo, the hospital recorded seven births on Christmas Day and three births on Boxing Day. She emphasized the significance of MTN Ghana's donation, stating that some mothers are unable to afford basic items needed for their newborns. "Bringing these items to support the mothers is a blessing, and they are truly grateful," she said.
