There were reports on Wednesday that the government will create a new digital watchdog to oversee online giants such as Facebook and Google.
The idea would be to regulate digital advertising and data protection.
But given many of the big US tech companies are based in America, and the internet is rather stateless, how effective might it be?
Adam Rose, data protection partner at Mishcon de Reya, says: "It's a challenge, it's definitely a challenge, but... you'd imagine, all the other countries that have major online industries are going to be looking at it similarly. Now, the challenge, obviously, is America."
But he adds there might be a "trueing up, rather than a rush to the bottom" if enough regulators, including the US, are on board.
