President John Dramani Mahama and Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur were on Monday sworn-in as President and Vice President of the Fourth Republic respectively.
President Mahama is also the fourth John to be sworn-in as President of the Republic since the inception of the Fourth Republic.
The other Johns who preceded him are; Former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor and late President John Evans Atta Mills.
Both President Mahama and Vice President Amissah-Arthur took the oath of allegiance and oaths of President and Vice President respectively amid thunderous cheers from National Democratic Congress supporters and sympathizers who had thronged the Independence Square to catch a glimpse of the occasion.
The programme was attended by a number of foreign Heads of State and their representatives including President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, President Thomas Yayi Boni of Benin, Faure Gnassinge, President of Togo, President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger and Prime Minister Luc-Adolphe Tiao of Burkina Faso.
Others are Daniel Yohannes, Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation representing the Government of the United States of America, and Chen Lei, Minister for Water Resources and Dams representing the Government of China, among other world leaders.
Also in attendance were former President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife Nana Konadu Agyemen Rawlings, Former President John Agyekum Kufuor and Hassan Ayariga, Presidential candidate of the People's National Convention (PNC) in the December 2012 Presidential election, who received a standing ovation from the stands at the Independence Square.
President Mahama used the occasion to pay tribute to some Ghanaians who played leading roles in placing Ghana on the pedestal of hope, growth and development.
He particularly eulogized leaders such as Yaa Asantewaa, Naa Gbewaa, J.B Danquah, Dr Kwegyir Aggrey, Efua Sutherland, and Tetteh Quarshie who had played pivotal roles in shaping the destiny of Ghana.
"I want to extol their virtues and hold them in high esteem for shaping our political history to this very level that we find it now."
He said although they were ordinary individual Ghanaians, their roles had been laudable and would continue to guide political leaders in future. He appealed to Ghanaians to play their roles responsibly to place their names and performance in the history of Ghana in the coming years.
"Each and everyone of you here has a role to play towards the growth and development of Ghana that you are expected to hold in trust for the next generations," President Mahama indicated.
