President John Dramani Mahama, Flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Thursday officially filed nomination papers to formally contest as the Presidential Candidate for Election 2012.
Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan Chairman Electoral Commission (EC), who accepted the nomination forms after scrutiny, said "Now President John Dramani Mahama is a legitimate Presidential Candidate to run on the ticket of the NDC in the 2012 presidential election on December 7."
The EC Chairman cautioned the ruling NDC against abuse of incumbency saying, "As a party in power, you must endeavour to set good examples and play your roles appropriately to ensure free and fair elections".
He also appealed to all political parties, democratic stakeholders and the media to make meaningful contributions to help the Commission in its quest to organize free and fair elections.
President Mahama's nomination papers were presented by a team of national executives led by Dr. Kwabena Adjei, National Chairman; Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketsia, General Secretary; and Madam Anita De-Soso, National Women Organizer.
Dr Adjei on behalf of the President and the ruling party gave the assurance that NDC would play by the rules to enhance the democratic process of Ghana.
"The NDC appreciates what is free and fair and is fully committed to ensuring peaceful elections", he said, adding "incumbency has its advantages and disadvantages and the party will not want to exploit incumbency".
The NDC also made full deposit of 285,000.00 as filling fee for presidential candidate and 275 parliamentary candidates.
