Deputy Commissioner of Police and Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Kwaku Ayensu Opare-Addo has advised drivers and road users to be more careful to help minimize road accidents.
He commended efforts by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) to educate drivers and road users to reduce road accidents and save lives.
DCOP Opare-Addo was addressing members of Ashanti Regional Road Safety Commission after a three-hour walk through principal streets of Kumasi on Friday to mark Road Safety Week celebration.
It is under the theme "Ensuring Crash Accident Free Elections in 2008".
He expressed concern about the high rate of road accidents towards the Christmas and election period and attributed this to over-speeding, over-taking, drunkenness and lack of maintenance of vehicles.
DCOP Opare-Addo appealed to the leadership of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Progressive Transport Owners' Association and transport unions to support the NRSC to check and reduce road accidents.
Mr Kwaku Oware-Boateng, Ashanti Regional Co-ordinator of NRSC said the celebration was to create awareness among the people on the need to check accidents during Election 2008 and Christmas.
He said other activities include lectures and quiz competition.
