The Asante-Akim North constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to wrest the seat from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the forthcoming general elections.
To this end, the Party has embarked on a "strategic" campaign to win the seat, which has been occupied by the NPP since 1996".
Mr Thomas Osei-Bonsu, parliamentary candidate of the NDC for the constituency, who said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Agogo, stressed that the NDC was in a better position to win the seat following the demise of the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu.
While sympathizing with the family of the late MP, Mr Osei-Bonsu noted that the time had come for the NDC to take over the seat, having put in place strategic measures to attract the electorate.
According to him, the NPP had won the previous elections based on the popularity of the late MP, saying they would not enjoy that advantage in this year's elections.
Mr Osei-Bonsu, who is the Assistant Headmaster of Collins Senior High School at Agogo, argued that the NPP parliamentary candidate, Mr Anyimadu-Antwi was unknown in the constituency; hence could not fill the vacuum created by Mr Baah-Wiredu in the election.
He further alleged that the election of Mr Anyimadu-Antwi to represent the NPP had created division in the Party as most people preferred one Hammond, who contested him at the primaries, adding that, the situation could jeopardize the chances of the NPP.
He discounted claims that the NPP candidate could win sympathy votes and gave the assurance that the NDC would win massively in both the presidential and parliamentary elections in the constituency.
Mr Osei-Bonsu observed that the warm reception given him in various communities he visited demonstrated the people's quest for change and urged the electorate to return the NDC to power to ensure speedy development of the country.
