Ghana witnessed one of its most disappointing spectacles in the boxing ring last Saturday when two of its fighters, John Laryea and Emmanuel Tagoe, failed to live up to expectations.

For Tagoe, the disappointment was compounded by his failure to make the required weight for his 140-pound international bout, resulting in the cancellation of the fight. Laryea, meanwhile, was disqualified after repeatedly hitting his opponent below the belt.

These incidents should not simply be dismissed as bad days at the office. They raise serious questions about discipline, preparation and the quality of supervision within Ghana's boxing fraternity.

It is particularly difficult to understand how an experienced professional boxer could exceed the required weight by more than 10 pounds for a 140-pound contest after spending weeks or months in training.

Boxers occasionally come in a pound or two above the limit, and there are provisions for them to make the weight. But being more than 10 pounds over the limit is a completely different matter.

The obvious question is who was monitoring Tagoe's weight?

A professional boxer does not operate alone. Trainers, managers, nutritionists and other members of a support team are expected to monitor every aspect of a fighter's preparation, including diet, weight, conditioning and discipline.

If Tagoe was allowed to get that far above the required weight, then the entire team must answer questions about what went wrong.

Was his weight being monitored regularly? Were his trainers aware of the problem? Did the management team underestimate the importance of making weight? Or did the boxer simply fail to follow the instructions given to him?

Whatever the explanation, the situation is unacceptable at this level of professional boxing.

Tagoe's failure is even more painful because of the promise he showed earlier in his career. Many boxing followers believed he possessed the talent and potential to become a world champion.

Yet his career has been marked by significant ups and downs, and opportunities to revive his ambitions have not always been fully seized.

The latest setback is therefore a major blow. At this stage of his career, time is no longer on his side.

Opportunities to compete at the highest level become increasingly difficult to secure as a boxer grows older, and another chance of this magnitude may not come soon.

Tagoe must therefore take responsibility, but his management team must also examine its own role.

Professional boxing is a serious business, and fighters cannot be expected to carry the entire burden of preparation without proper guidance and supervision.

Laryea's case is different, but it also deserves serious reflection. Repeatedly hitting an opponent below the belt is a fundamental violation of the rules, and the resulting disqualification was avoidable. However, unlike Tagoe's situation, Laryea still has plenty of opportunity to learn from his mistake.

He should not allow the disappointment to destroy his confidence. Instead, he must return to the gym, study his mistakes, improve his discipline and come back stronger. A single setback should not define a boxer's career.

But Ghana's boxing authorities, promoters, managers and trainers must also look beyond the individual fighters. These incidents should prompt a broader conversation about how Ghanaian boxers are prepared for major international bouts.
