The Ghana Football Association has been inundated with global interest in the vacant Black Stars coaching role, with more than 600 applications received following the dismissal of Otto Addo.
GFA President Kurt Okraku disclosed the scale of interest, describing it as a reflection of Ghana’s enduring appeal on the international football stage despite recent setbacks. “We have received over 600 applications for Black Stars job,” he revealed, underlining the competitive nature of the selection process.
The coaching position became vacant after Addo was relieved of his duties in the wake of a string of disappointing results, including defeats to Austria and Germany. The decision to part ways with the former coach was taken after a late-night meeting in Stuttgart, signalling a decisive shift in the team’s technical direction.
Okraku indicated that the FA has already begun a rigorous review of applications, with both local and foreign candidates under consideration. He stressed that while the volume of interest is significant, the emphasis remains firmly on quality, experience and alignment with Ghana’s long-term football strategy.
“We will have a new coach in a week or two,” Okraku confirmed in an interview with TV3, suggesting that the process has been accelerated to meet pressing timelines as the national team prepares for a demanding international calendar.
The urgency is heightened by upcoming high-profile friendlies against Mexico and Wales in May, fixtures that will offer the incoming coach limited time to assess the squad, implement tactical systems and begin rebuilding team cohesion.
Attention is also firmly fixed on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Ghana face a daunting group that includes Panama, Croatia and England. The strength of the opposition has amplified the importance of appointing a technically astute and experienced manager capable of steering the team through a competitive campaign.
The FA’s leadership has pledged a transparent and thorough selection process, mindful of growing expectations among supporters and stakeholders eager to see the Black Stars return to their competitive best on the global stage.
