The 11th edition of the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup kicks off today at the Madina Astro Turf in Accra, with organisers praising former Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia for his continued support of the annual Zongo community football tournament.

The competition, which has become a key fixture marking the end of Ramadan since its inception in 2015, will feature 16 Zongo communities competing for honours in what is expected to be a day-long event culminating in a grand finale later in the evening.

In a message shared on the tournament’s official platform, organisers expressed appreciation to Dr Bawumia for what they described as his consistent financial backing over the years. “We wish to express our utmost gratitude to former Vice President,Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for coming through to support us, once again. His consistent support towards the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup over the years, has contributed immensely to bringing youth of our Zongo communities together through football,” the statement said.

Dr Bawumia has been associated with the tournament for the past decade, supporting its organisation and hosting some of the winning teams. In 2024, he rewarded champions Ashaiman with GH¢20,000 and facilitated the construction of an astro turf in the community, a project that began before he left office.

The tournament has grown in stature over the years, drawing participation from nearly 40 Zongo communities, although only six have managed to win the title. Ashaiman remain the most successful side with three titles, followed by Kasoa with two, while Mamobi, Nima, Madina and Adabraka have each lifted the trophy once.

This year’s opening fixture will see Nsawam Zongo take on Sabon Zongo at 9:00am, setting the stage for a series of matches expected to attract large crowds and dignitaries.

Organisers say the event continues to serve as a platform to promote unity, discipline and youth engagement within Zongo communities, using football as a tool for social cohesion.
