The governing body for amateur boxing, the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), goes to the polls on December 27 to elect new officials for key positions in the administration of the sport for a 4-year term.
A press release issued in Accra last Thursday and signed by the Assistant General Secretary of the GBF, Emelia Ansah, noted that the tenure of the current administration led by Immigration officer, DSI Bernard Quartey, expires on December 18, with modalities for the elections and list of delegates to be announced in subsequent communications.
Per the GBF constitution, the elections will elect a President, two Vice-Presidents, a Treasurer and two executive members to supervise the national boxing teams, Black Bombers, Hitters and Rockets until December 2029.
Meanwhile, the incumbent President and his deputy, Alhaji Dauda Fuseni, the 1st Vice-President, are two leading candidates for the top post, both having declared their intentions and strenuously campaigning underground.
Competition is also keen in the race to succeed Alhaji Fuseni with two-time world title winning trainer, Adama Addy now enstooled Nii Gonti I of Atukpai and top promoter Gordon Frimpong alias Osibor of Osibor Promotions, both unveiling campaign posters to amplify their respective ambitions to ascend to the second most powerful position on the GBF board.
It remains unclear, however, if the incumbent 2nd Vice-President Solomon Otoo Lartey, Treasurer Mustapha Nettey or executives Alhaji Abdulai Issaka Pangasur and Foster Enam Dagadu will seek re-election.
Under the current administration, despite the ignominy of not qualifying a single boxer to the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Black Bombers made history by winning an unprecedented 4 gold medals and a total of 7 medals including a first female boxing medallist in Janet Acquah during the Accra 2023 African Games, whilst Joseph Commey and Abraham Mensah also grabbed silver medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK where boxing won 3 of Ghana's five total medals.
Youth development also took centre stage in the past 4 years with the Black Rockets making a first ever appearance at the 2024 IBA World Youth Boxing Championships in Montenegro and returning a 100% gold winning performance at the 2025 African Boxing Youth Championships in Conakry, Guinea last May where all three of Ghana's representatives, Mathias Ashitey, George Dowuona and Desmond Pappoe, topped their respective divisions.
