The Chairman of Bechem United, Kingsley Owusu Achau, has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to publish weekly reviews of referees’ performances in the local league to enhance transparency and accountability.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic after his team’s 1-1 draw with Asante Kotoko at the Baba Yara Stadium last Sunday, Mr Achau expressed concern over what he described as poor officiating undermining the credibility of the Ghana Premier League.
Referee Joseph Kwofie, who officiated the match, was singled out by Mr Achau for what he termed biased officiating.
The Bechem United boss urged the GFA to review the referee’s decisions and take appropriate sanctions if necessary.
"The referee was highly biased and bent on ensuring that the Porcupine Warriors secured the maximum points," he alleged.
According to Mr Achau, such performances not only affected the integrity of the game but also fuelled hooliganism and violence at match venues.
"Now the GFA has put in place mechanisms to curtail hooliganism, which is commendable, but if it is not supported by fair officiating, it will not stand the test of time. A time will come when these measures will break down," he warned.
He further claimed that even Kotoko fans were dissatisfied with the referee's conduct, with some supporters approaching him after the match to express their disappointment and offer support.
"The officials didn't want Kotoko to drop a point, so the referee had the task of ensuring they got the maximum points," he stated.
Mr Achau emphasised that poor refereeing had become a major obstacle to the growth of the league and urged the GFA to act swiftly to clean up officiating standards to safeguard the future of Ghana football.
