Ghana’s volleyball champions, El Wak Wings, are locked in a frantic race against time as they seek an urgent financial lifeline to compete in the 2025 Men’s African Volleyball Club Championship in Misurata, Libya, which commences on April 17.
With their scheduled departure set for April 15, the team's officials are staring at a $35,000 shortfall that could derail their continental dreams.
The 24-team championship runs until April 30 and brings together the crème de la crème of African club volleyball.
During a visit to the National Sports Authority (NSA) headquarters in Accra last Wednesday, April 10, the team, led by its manager, Divine Edem Dotse, made an impassioned appeal for support.
The meeting doubled as both a celebration of their qualification and a plea for help as time ticks ominously.
Responding to the team’s call, NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah pledged his outfit’s commitment to securing the needed support.
“We are committed to all sporting disciplines and the government is poised to invest in them to generate jobs and revenue,” Mr Ankrah assured.
El Wak Wings, the only Ghanaian club to qualify for the elite tournament, earned their place after a remarkable campaign in the Greater Accra Men’s Volleyball League.
“We are fully prepared to win gold in Libya,” declared El Wak Wings founder, Mr Dotse. “But we need financial backing to make the trip and represent Ghana with pride.
