Ghana Premier League side Bechem United FC marked a momentous occasion last Saturday as the club celebrated their 25th anniversary with a grand dinner and Awards Night held at the Hunters Joint, a newly constructed restaurant within the Nana Fosu Gyabour Stadium in Bechem.
The event, which was on the theme: "Creating Jobs for the Youth", celebrated the club's milestones and achievements, drawing together passionate supporters, key stakeholders and members of the community. It also served as the launch pad for several impactful initiatives aimed at empowering the youth and fostering sustainable development.
Agribusiness initiative
A standout moment of the evening was the launch of an innovative agribusiness programme aimed at empowering both supporters and the wider public to explore opportunities in agriculture. The programme was rolled out through the Bechem United Credit Union and introduced four primary products under an out-grower system: maize and vegetable farming, as well as poultry and piggery farming.
Participants in the programme will be required to provide guarantees from their respective associations or groups, which will share joint responsibility for loan repayment. In addition, the Credit Union will play a vital role in marketing the agricultural produce to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the venture.
Bechem United’s commitment to community development remains unwavering. The club announced that two new 20-seater water closet toilet facilities, currently under construction at the Bechem Government Hospital and Adum Hospital, will be completed and inaugurated by Easter this year.
During the celebration, the club's President, Kingsley Owusu-Achau, also expressed concerns about the underutilisation of the Library and IT Centre, a facility donated to the community four years ago. Despite offering free access to the public, the centre has not received the level of engagement anticipated. The club’s president urged the community to make full use of this invaluable resource to support education and enhance digital literacy.
Impressive performance
As the ‘Hunters’ continue to make strides on the field, Bechem United are currently in strong form in the Ghana Premier League. With seven wins and three draws in their last 11 matches, they sit fourth on the league table, trailing only Kpando Heart of Lions, Bibiani Goldstars, and Nations FC.
While they were handed a default loss for their December 26 match against Basake Holy Stars after failing to show up for the encounter in Aiyinase, Bechem United quickly rebounded. Last Sunday, they triumphed 1-0 over Nations FC at the Nana Fosu Gyabour Park, securing a spot in the Round of 16 of the MTN FA Cup.
