Multichoice Ghana, together with the 'Year of Return' Steering Committee from the Ghana Tourism Authority has organised a media encounter with the current World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Champion, Kofi Kingston. Real name Kofi Sarkodie-Mensah, Kofi Kingston is on a four day visit to Ghana since his first in 1993.
Speaking to the media, Kofi Kingston expressed joy at the warm reception he has received from Ghanaians. Describing his road to success, he said that though his debut in the WWE was in 2008, he never had a match or title until he partook in the Wrestlemania saying "I had to wait 11 years to finally win the WWE championship".
He, therefore, described the Year of Return initiative by the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo as timely because he gets to return after several years with something.
"It is amazing to be here. It is fortunate that I get to be in a position to inspire people" he noted. Describing himself as not so huge in stature or tall, he still managed to win the title and urged others to follow their dreams emphasizing that "I am living proof that you can be whatever you want to be".
He promised to maintain his title and also encouraged other Africans in the diaspora to honour the Year of Return noting "this is the most heartwarming feeling I have felt in a long time".
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr Kwesi Agyeman said that Kofi's visit to Ghana will inspire others in the diaspora to also visit their roots. He added that the resilience of the African spirit several years after slavery inspired the president to launch the Year of Return.
The Managing Director of MultiChoice Ghana, Cecil Sunkwa-Mills said that sports is a powerful tool and a focus point for development in any nation. He said through sports, MultiChoice Ghana has offered many Ghanaians and Africans the opportunity to get to know and love Kofi. He added that icons like him can be an inspiration to let people know that they can achieve anything they want.
Kofi’s mother, Dr Elizabeth Sarkodie expressed joy that her son is finally living his dream.
Kofi Kingston is travelling with a film crew that will capture his experiences on his visit. He will have a meeting with the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, visit both his paternal and maternal hometowns in Ejisu and Atwima Techiman, and the Manhyia Palace, where he would pay homage to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.
