The Sunyani Area Two boys’ football team at the weekend won the 2018 MTN Football Gala competition, organised for 16 communities in the Sunyani Municipality.
The clubs, battled it out at the grand finale with the Sunyani Area One Boys football team succumbing to 5-4 defeat on penalty shoot-outs in the competition, organised by MTN Ghana, to climax the MTN-Suncity Festival.
Both clubs went home with undisclosed sums of money and sets of jerseys as prizes for their efforts.
The MTN-Suncity Fest is an annual event, jointly organized by MTN Ghana and Suncity Radio, a Sunyani-based FM station, to search and nurture football talents in the Brong-Ahafo Region.
It also provides opportunity to create awareness about the effects of drug abuse, alcoholism and acts of immorality.
Mr. Mommen Tawfiq, MTN’s Area Sales Manager for Ashanti and Brong-Ahafo, told the GNA, that the annual event formed part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility.
He advised the youth to abstain from pre-marital sexual practices and avoid unhealthy lifestyles, that could ruin their future and rather channel their exuberance into productive ventures.
“The festival creates opportunity to search for and unearth and develop football talents in the region,” Mr. Tawfiq added.
Mr. Ransford Antwi, the owner and Chief Executive Officer of Suncity Radio said, aside the main objectives, the festival also sought to promote peaceful cohesion among all class of people in the Municipality and the entire region.
The Abesim boys’ football team, defending champions was eliminated at the quarter final stage of the competition.
