Mr. Wilson Agbesi, General Secretary of Ghana Wheelchair Basketball Federation (GWBF), has commended the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS), for the swift action over comments, made by the National Sports Authority (NSA) Regional Director for Ashanti Region, with regards to the use of Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Saturdays.
Mr. Joshua Mensah, Regional Director of the NSA, was summoned by MOYS to Accra to explain comments over the use of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, which suggested that, the facility would be closed to sporting activities on Saturdays, to make way for funerals and other social activities in a bid to generate funds for the running of the stadium.
It would be recalled that the Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports Mr. Pius Enam Hadzide summoned Mr. Mensah to Accra to explain "why he should not be sanctioned for making public such comments comments without authorization”. In a release copied to GNA Sports, Mr Agbesi noted that the statement might have been twisted by the media, but commended the ministry for the call, since it would bring an end to speculations.
“The call to explain the statement does not prove he is guilty. He can only be proven guilty, after the explanation and I strongly believe Mr. Enam Hadzide, was just doing his administrative duties.
“We need to applaud him for the bold initiative. This is a step that could bring sanity into the sports administration in the country and we should all be seen to be encouraging such bold initiatives from the ministry,” he stated.
According to Mr. Agbesi, “a new era has dawn on sports in the country, since the two young men took over affairs of the ministry, even though they might face some challenges, especially in their first year.
“I think so far so good, they are on track and they need the support of all of us. They have been opened to criticisms and that is good for us.
“These criticisms have been without personal attacks but facts and figures,” he stated.
