Gaza Strip ruling Islamic Hamas movement denied on Monday night that Saudi Arabia has presented an initiative aimed at ending the current Palestinian internal rift.
Sami Abu Zuhri, Gaza-based Hamas spokesman, told reporters that his movement has not been notified by anybody of a Saudi initiative aimed to achieve reconciliation between Fatah party and its rival Hamas.
Saudi media said on Sunday that Saudi Arabia is working on an initiative over reaching a reconciliation agreement between Hamas and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' secular Fatah.
However, Abu Zuhri said that his movement has felt great Saudi concerns over ending the current Palestinian rift and achieving Palestinian internal reconciliation.
In February 2007, Hamas and Abbas signed a reconciliation agreement in Mecca and agreed to form a national unity government led by Hamas. However, Abbas deposed the government after Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip by force in June 2007.
Hamas refuses to sign an Egyptian-drafted pact of reconciliation presented to the Palestinian factions in October 2009, saying that it had some reservations. Fatah has accepted the pact.
