Political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Abdul-Jalilu Ateku, says the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the Akwatia by-election is further evidence that the party is still reeling from its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Commenting on the NPP’s performance on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Wednesday September 3, Dr Ateku noted that the party is yet to fully regroup and reorganise itself following what he described as a “massive” loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) last year.
“The fact is that NPP has not recovered from their 2024 defeat because if you look at the election victory of the NDC in 2024 — very massive,” he said.
He added that the NPP needs to urgently confront internal issues, including divisions and unresolved grievances, if it is to remain competitive in future elections.
“So the NPP will need to put their party in order, address key issues, the differences and what have you. In my view, they are yet to do that.”
The NDC’s Bernard Bediako secured a decisive win in the Akwatia by-election, flipping a constituency previously held by the NPP. The result has sparked debate about the current state of the NPP and its readiness to mount a credible challenge in the 2028 general elections.
