Enoch Afoakwa, a member of the legal team for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has criticised the bail conditions imposed by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), describing them as arbitrary, harsh, and excessive.
Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Thursday, May 29, Afoakwa raised concerns about the fairness and legality of the bail terms.
“It is arbitrary. It is harsh and it is excessive,” Afoakwa said bluntly, expressing frustration over what he believes is a breach of legal fairness and due process.
Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation for multiple financial crimes, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai has also confirmed that a separate probe links him to an alleged international organised crime network.
EOCO on Wednesday, May 28, granted Wontumi a GHS50 million bail with sureties but he has been unable to meet the bail conditions.
Despite legal efforts to secure his release, Wontumi remains in custody after his legal team failed to meet the bail requirements.
“We pray that law enforcement agencies should be minded of due process,” Afoakwa added, calling on authorities to ensure that legal procedures are followed fairly and without political bias.
