The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has called for a coalition to spearhead a comprehensive constitutional review in the country, urging all citizens to seize the opportunity to redefine Ghana’s governance structure and adopt transformative ideas.
Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of a Policy Dialogue organised by Democracy Hub at the British Council, themed The Case for a New Constitution and Key Policy Expectations for the Incoming Government, Director of Policy Engagement and Partnerships at CDD-Ghana, Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante, stressed the need for a multi-stakeholder approach in the constitutional review process.
He also highlighted the need for deliberate planning and clear objectives to ensure meaningful reforms.
“As for mobilising citizens to push this through, there is no option. You need the citizens to buy into it. So I don’t think that that is a problem. There are many things that we can address with even a statute or even an LI or even coming to a certain consensus in a convention that this is how we are going to organise ourselves.
“Some of the challenges we had the last time we tried to do it was that we couldn’t build even cross-party consensus, which is very important given the way the amendment provisions are.
“It is Parliament that is going to do it, so you do need to build consensus. Citizens are quite united in the sense that they want some constitutional reform.”
