The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ahafo Ano South West has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding its Parliamentary seat following a legal challenge by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The NDC has applied to the High Court in Kumasi to contest the election of Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah as a Member of Parliament for the constituency. This follows a re-collation of results conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC) after disputes arose over the initial tally.
The legal battle is not limited to Ahafo Ano South West. The NDC in the Ashanti Region has also filed similar challenges for the Obuasi East and Ahafo Ano North constituencies, asserting that its candidates were the rightful winners in all three areas.
According to the NDC, the elections in these constituencies were plagued by disturbances, and the EC’s recounts unfairly overturned results in favour of the NPP candidates.
Eric Owura Agyekum, the NPP’s Deputy Secretary for Ahafo Ano South West, has dismissed the NDC’s claims, stating that the NPP won the seat fairly.
He further encouraged party supporters to remain steadfast as the NPP works to uphold the electoral victory.
“The NPP lost the presidential election to the NDC by some 489 votes difference and we have accepted it without resorting to violence. It is therefore instructive for the good people of the Ahafo Ano South West, particularly the NDC to note that for the parliamentary election, the NPP’s Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah won with 686 votes, which we normally refer to as skirt and blouse.
“Let me further proceed to give you some polling stations that voted for the NDC in the presidential but voted the NPP in the parliamentary which reaffirms our assertion of the people having voted skirt and blouse.”
