Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced plans to develop three major railway lines across Ghana, aiming to accelerate the nation’s transformation and bolster its economic growth.
Speaking to stakeholders in the Atwima Mponua Constituency on Monday, Dr Bawumia emphasised the critical role that railway infrastructure will play in leveraging Ghana’s rich mineral resources and enhancing connectivity.
“One of my priorities in terms of infrastructure development is railway development,” Dr Bawumia declared at the commencement of his Ashanti Regional tour. Highlighting the strategic importance of railways, he added, “It is very important for our country because if we are blessed with bauxite and we don't have enough railway lines, it is problematic. When we develop our railways, it will really help our country.”
Dr Bawumia outlined his vision for the railway network, detailing three key lines that are set to transform the country’s transportation landscape.
“There are three major railway lines that I want to focus on. From Tema in Greater Accra to Kumasi; and then from Kumasi to Takoradi; and then from Awaasi, through Nyinahin to Eduade. We are going to do that railway for you,” he explained. Additionally, he mentioned a shorter line, “We are going to fix the short distance line from Adum to Akaase,” ensuring comprehensive coverage across various regions.
Despite the ongoing construction of numerous road projects, Dr Bawumia stressed the necessity of balancing both rail and road infrastructure to achieve sustainable development.
“We are constructing roads and we are not done yet, but I will also focus on railways because that is where the transformation is going to come from,” he stated. This dual approach is designed to create a robust and integrated transportation network that supports both local and international trade.
The Vice President further elaborated on the economic benefits of the proposed railway lines, particularly in the mining sector.
“The railway is very important for our country. We will take it from Accra, through Kumasi to the north. And we will explore bauxite, iron ore and all the deposits. This is what will bring the needed transformation,” Dr Bawumia asserted, highlighting how improved railway infrastructure will facilitate the efficient movement of minerals, thereby enhancing Ghana’s position in the global market.
