The Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikwei Central in the Greater Accra Region, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has urged Parliament to repair the negative image the citizenry currently have about them since they have a responsibility to repair the tainted image.
He said the House must do its best to bring back sanity for Ghanaians to repose confidence in MPs.
Mr Boamah, who is theVice-Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament, posited that “the House disgraced itself on January 6-7, 2021 during the inauguration of the 8th parliament and further disgraced itself last year when it rose on December 21, 2021 for which citizens currently have a negative image of the House and we have a responsibility to repair that tainted image and such incidents which occurred in parliament were unfortunate”.
He asserted that on January 6, 2021, MPs disgraced themselves, and on the last day of parliament, they also did not behave themselves well which had tainted their image before their constituents and there was the need for them not to repeat such unfortunate incidents when they resumed on January 25.
According to him, when issues are analysed today, they realised Ghanaians currently hadnegative perception of the House and they have to correct that immediately because in a democratic dispensationpeople cannot get everything they wanted because when the government presents its policies, programmes and social interventions they have the opportunity to register their displeasure.
Mr Boamah averred that after that was done, constituents had to be informed about the position of their MPs, then he and the court of public opinion make their own decisions however, the opposition should not frustrate government business because they want to score political points.
The MP disagreed with an assertion that the Minority was making issues difficult for the government and indicated that the Minority would always engage in politics and try to hold the government to account but in doing so, they have to be circumspect and have the interest of the nation at heart.
