The Coalition for Democratic Election Observers (CODEO) has engaged residents of Lekpogunor in the Ningo-Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region on the December 17 Referendum and the District Level Elections (DLE).
The CODEO public engagement, which was conducted in collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) was to educate and engage the electorates to understand the rationale for the December 17 Referendum and DLE.
CODEO and NCCE also used the platform to educate the electorate on electoral laws, the tenets of the referendum, and other related issues and called on the public to be active participants of the referendum and the DLE.
Ms. Fauziatu Umar, CODEO Civic Education Officer stated that, it was mandated to observe all democratic elections and the responsibility to whip-up the interest of the populace to take part in democratically organised elections as it offered them the opportunity to elect their leaders.
Ms Umar added that the citizenry needed education especially on the referendum adding that state institutions must be resourced to effectively educate the public well before December 17.
Mr Oppong Mensah, Ningo-Prampram NCCE Director, explained that the Commission was mandated by the 1992 Constitution to educate the public on constitutional matters and other issues of public interest.
He told the participants that, the December 17 referendum was to see whether the country would allow political parties to sponsor candidates to local level elections or not.
