The Northern Regional Police Command has granted bail to the Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Daniel Bugri Naabu, for allegedly making an inflammatory statement on a campaign platform.
Mr Naabu, who reported himself to the police last Saturday morning upon an invitation on the grounds of causing fear and panic, was cautioned after his statement was taken, and is to report to the police periodically.
Questioning
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ebenezer Tetteh, who confirmed the story to the Daily Graphic, said Mr Naabu, who was accompanied by some regional executives of the party, reported himself to the police last Saturday morning based on an invitation by the police.
He said Mr Naabu was questioned in relation to an inflammatory statement he made at the party’s rally at Savelugu on Sunday, October 15, 2016.
Recall
ASP Tetteh said Mr Naabu was cautioned after his statement was taken and granted police enquiry bail; he is to report to the police from time to time.
It would be recalled that Mr Naabu, at the campaign launch of the party’s parliamentary candidate for Savelugu on Sunday, October 15, 2016, was alleged to have made a statement that the NPP would deploy well-built men at every single polling station in the Northern Region to police ballot boxes on voting day to prevent them from being snatched by supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Naabu is further alleged to have told NPP supporters to chase and smash the head of any NDC supporter who would snatch a ballot box on voting day.
The statement by Mr Naabu drew criticism and condemnation from civil society groups, some security analysts and the NDC who called on the police at a press conference held in Tamale last week to invite him for questioning.
