He said the media was a major stakeholder in sustaining peace and that “the NPC wants the media to partner with the council in promoting peace in the country because it was not only the duty of the council to maintain peace before, during and after the election”.

Mr. Azuimah made the call at the opening of a two-day workshop, organised by the NPC in collaboration with the Ghana Institute of Governance and Security (GIGS), a non-governmental organisation, sponsored by the European Union (EU), to promote security and governance.

The workshop, which was held on the theme, “The strategy to ensure violence- free election 2016”, also aimed at identifying problems within the media landscape.

The Executive Director of GIGS, David Agbee, asked media practitioners to abide by the ethics of their profession, adding “the media has mandate to give accurate information, be objective and neutral”.

Mr. Agbee indicated that, media practitioners must have moral principles to withstand pressure from political parties to avoid towing their (political parties’) ways in the delivery of their duties.

The Reverend Father George Gyasi Adjei, a member of the Ashanti Regional Peace Council advised media practitioners to promote peace, and to be abreast of topical national issues.
