Lennart Johannson will step down as UEFA president in 2007, one year later than expected.
The 75-year-old Swede, who has headed European football's governing body since 1990, was handed an extension to his mandate at the UEFA congress meeting Thursday.
UEFA decided to postpone the election in order to coincide with the vote for the next FIFA president also scheduled for 2007.
The move was backed by all 52 football federations.
Two of the favourites to succeed Johannson are Germany's Franz Beckenbauer, the 1974 World Cup winner, and France's Michel Platini.
