Dutch consultancy and engineering firm DHV is working on a major expansion and upgrading of the drinking water network in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. This work will make a significant contribution to improving the supply of drinking water and achieving the Millennium targets of the United Nations for water and sanitation.
The client is FIPAG, the government organization responsible for Maputo?€?s drinking water. The contract is worth 1.4 million euro and will be completed in 35 months.
The client has engaged DHV to oversee construction and expansion of the drinking water network, including installation of many kilometers of new pipes, reservoirs and pumping stations. The engineering and consultancy firm will ensure that the two contractors (one from China and the other from France) deliver the required quality, meet the defined requirements and adhere to the work schedule. For this contract DHV will cooperate closely in a joint venture with its subsidiary SEED in Mozambique.
The work is part of the Maputo Water Supply Project (MWSP) that will improve the supply of drinking water in Maputo. Mozambique?€?s capital currently has approximately 1.8 million inhabitants, but only 40% of them have access to clean drinking water. Many areas of the city are additionally affected by frequent losses of water pressure. The objective of MSWP is to supply drinking water to 1.5 million inhabitants in 2014. To do this it is necessary to increase capacity and improve the distribution of water.
DHV won the contract in an international call for tenders on the strength of its extensive worldwide experience of work of this kind. The firm has proven its expertise in the drinking water sector in parts of the world including Africa and Asia (Indonesia, India, Vietnam and China).
