Tigo Ghana as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility partnered United Way Ghana to celebrate this year's Valentine in a unique way with the children of 'Akropong School for the Blind'.
On 14th February, 2013, Tigo directed the spirit of love and kindness of the 'Day of Caring'-Valentine's Day edition towards community building activities to build on strategies to improve lives of many and spread smiles.
Tigo 'Day of Caring' is an initiative Tigo undertakes every month. Tigo Staff are given the opportunity to pledge their commitment to change the course of the future for the common good of all.
The Akropong School for the Blind in the Eastern Region was the beneficiary of the Valentine's Day edition of Tigo's 'Day of Caring'. Tigo employees engaged in general clean-up of dormitories at the school, bathrooms and the school compound. The Girls' dormitory was painted whiles doors and louvers of the dormitory were replaced.
A mentoring session was organised for the students where they were given the opportunity to interact with the staff of Tigo. Both teachers and students received several souvenirs; pens, books, mugs and many more from Tigo. Student population of 375, were beneficiaries of the Tigo Day of Caring
A class 6 pupil, Grace Konadu expressed her profound gratitude to the premier telecommunication for making this year's Valentine's Day a memorable one.
"I was very amazed and filled with joy when I heard you scrubbed our bathrooms, God richly bless you for this humble gesture" she added.
Mrs Deborah Akpakpo, the corporate responsibility manager at Tigo Ghana said in interview: Supporting communities and improving the lives of not only our customers but also, those of the less privileged and the Ghanaian community in general is one of our primary objectives. We have collaborated with United Way Ghana in undertaking numerous initiatives for the past 4 years and this is the continuation of our partnership.
For us at Tigo, helping people advance in life, reaching out to children and putting smiles on their faces on a day like this is worth the time and effort. We are glad our course has been appreciated.
Nana Ama Ofei-Nkansah, Chairperson of the Women's Leadership Council of the United Way Ghana, who doubles as the Queen Mother of the Akuapem Traditional Council also expressed contentment with the turn of events and commended Tigo Ghana for partaking in this initiative.
