The AfricaMagic Viewers' Choice Awards was launched Monday October 22 2012
at the African Regent Hotel in Accra. The event was attended by several
Ghanaian movie stars and industry professionals including Joselyn Dumas,
Lydia Forson, James Gardiner, Juliet Ibrahim, Ken Attoh and others.
The AfricaMagic Viewers' Choice Awards is an initiative by Multichoice
Africa and AfricaMagic to celebrate African film and television talent,
both in front of and behind the cameras.
In total, 28 awards in 26 categories will be awarded ranging from acting
and directing to script-writing and cinematography. Other fields which
will be honored include editing, make-up, sound, lighting and costuming
among others.
In addition the awards will feature two categories destined to become
annual talking points- the Industry Merit Award and the TrailBlazer of
the Year Award.
Awards will be handed out at two separate events to be held in March 2013
in Lagos - the first event will be dedicated to standout technical
accomplishments while the main event will be a glittering, glamourous gala
night. Both events will be screened to DStv audiences across the continent
with the gala being screened live.
Launching the awards, General Manager for MultiChoice Ghana, Mr Cecil
Sunkwa-Mill urged Ghanaian film makers to submit their entries to be part
of the awards.
"Today, Africa Magic has become a channel of choice and widely viewed
across the continent. This could not have been possible without great
productions of the Ghanaian movie industry and the enormous support from
the media.
The AfricaMagic Viewers' Choice Awards is one way of recognition of key
talents in the industry and the very people who have contributed to the
growth and success of African entertainment and continuous expression of
our beautiful culture over the years" he said.
Mr. Sunkwa-Mills also acknowledged Mrs. Biola Alabi, Head of M-Net Africa
for her vision and believe in the growth of the African movie industry
plus her very instrumental role in the innovation and successful growth of
viewership and preference of Africa Magic.
Ghanaian movie producer, director and writer, Shirley Frimpong-Manso was a
special guest at the launch. She expressed her delight with the platform
provided by AfricaMagic where African film makers can reach a wider
market.
Gideon Khobane, Head of Marketing for AfricaMagic took guests through the
entry process and announced the new deadline for submission for the
awards, November 9 2012.
