Indonesia is scheduled to hold population census in 2010 in a bid to provide the latest and more complete data on the country's population for the United Nations (UN) to assess Indonesia's performance in complying with the points stipulated in the UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) , an Indonesian senior official said
here on Monday.
Indonesian Statistic Center Bureau (BPS) Chairman Rusman Heriawan said that the census is expected to take place in May next year and at least 700,000 people will be deployed to collect data from the public.
"The census would be the most complete one that has ever been conducted in Indonesia. It would provide data on Indonesia's population, complete with names and addresses of the citizens. Besides that, it would provide data on
the jobs, marital status and persons with disabilities in the families," Rusman told a press conference after exposing the Indonesia's census program.
Rusman said, people would have to answer more questions to the census attendants as the BPS has modified the question list into more detailed ones. "We added the questions from the previous 17 to 43 items next year," Rusman added.
He said the result of the latest census in 2000 only provided the number of population until the smallest level of territory, but without
names and addresses. The more complete data would be very useful for the government to take policies for the public, Rusman added.
Since the census is a program mandated by the UN, the conduction of census in Indonesia would be conducted almost simultaneously with other countries across the world as the UN required it must be conducted at the same time in 2010.
According to the head of the BPS, the government has allocated 3.3 trillion rupiah (350.5 million U.S. dollars) to finance the periodical population data collection activities scheduled once every ten years in the country.
"The result of the 2010 population census would initially be announced by the president in August 2010 during the official plenary assembly in front of parliament members. The president would announce the number of population and the preliminary results of the census," Rusman said.
The BPS chairman said earlier that the country's population stood at 2301.83 million as of August this year.
Indonesia would hand over the result of 2010 census to the UN in December next year. "The census result constitutes the essential indicators of Indonesia's capability in complying with the goals contained in the MDGS," Rusman added.
