Matters related to the financing of climate change control will be the top priority for Poland at the EU summit in Brussels starting Thursday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said here Tuesday.
"My cabinet has formulated a firm position on this," the prime minister was quoted by the Polish news agency PAP as saying.
The summit will discuss methods of financial assistance to poor non-EU countries in reducing CO2 emissions. Poland wants the member states'
contributions to be related to their GDP rather than CO2 emissions.
Tusk said it was imperative that the Brussels summit adopt agreed decisions on a joint position of the EU at the Copenhagen summit on climate change.
"We must avoid a situation when the EU goes to Copenhagen full of dreams about climate protection but the end result is higher contributions by countries like Poland than some richer states," Tusk warned.
He said he had made it clear to his interlocutors from other EU countries that, if need be, he would present a firm position at the Brussels summit. He stressed that the summit must decide unanimously.
