The rehabilitation and resettlement of nearly 280,000 persons who are displaced by the conflict is one of Sri Lanka's foremost priorities, Sri Lankan Minister of Foreign Affairs Rohitha Bogollagama said here on Sunday.
Speaking at the 8th Asia Security Summit (Shangri- La Dialogue), Bogollagama said Sri Lanka has come out as a free country today, free from the scourge of terrorism, but civilians accommodated in the welfare villages lack family reunification, the influx of a large number of civilians within a short span of time scattered families.
He said that the Sri Lanka government is endeavoring to address the issue of family reunification.
Bogollagama also called on support from international community for the complete elimination of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
"Although the LTTE has been militarily defeated, we are left with its international network largely intact," he said, adding that "it is important for the international community to take all measures to assist the government of Sri Lanka to crack down the global network of LTTE."
Bogollagama is in Singapore for the annual Asia Security Summit, which is held from May 29 to 31. The summit brings together about 22 ministerial-level guests, along with parliamentarians, military leaders and security experts from more than 27 countries and regions for discussions on regional security issues and defense cooperation.
