Myanmar's military official said here on Sunday that the legal action against Aung San Suu Kyi is an internal affair which is in accordance with its domestic law.
Speaking at the eighth Asia Security Summit (Shangri-La Dialogue), Myanmar's Deputy Minister of Defense Aye Myint said Aung San Suu Kyi has committed a cover-up of the truth by her failure to report an illegal immigrant to the authorities concerned.
"There was no option but to open legal proceedings in accordance with the law," he said, adding that "it is the universal legal principle that no one is above the law."
He said the legal action against Aung San Suu Kyi is merely an internal affair of Myanmar taking action through its legal system in accordance with domestic law.
"If any country interferes in the internal affairs of another country, that particular act may possibly affect the mutual understanding and friendly relationship between the countries," he added.
Aye Myint is in Singapore for the annual Asia Security Summit, which is held from May 29 to 31. The summit brings together about 22 ministerial-level guests, along with parliamentarians, military leaders and security experts from more than 27 countries and regions for discussions on regional security issues and defense cooperation.
