An Account Clerk working for the Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS) Credit Union, was on Monday jailed seven years in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court for stealing GH¢6,615.50 from his employers.
In addition, he was ordered by the court to refund the amount or risk facing a civil action at the end of his term.
Osei Gyamfi, 57, pleaded guilty to the charge and he was convicted on his own plea.
Briefing the court presided over by Madam Wilhelmina Hammond, Police Chief Inspected Comfort Baffour-Kyei named the complainant as Mr Oppong Mensah, Manager of the Credit Union.
She said in December 2007, all the Union workers including Gyamfi went on vacation during the Christmas break and resumed in January 2008. She said Gyamfi, however, failed to resume.
Inspector Baffour-Kyei said when after four months Gyamfi was not returning to work, the Union audited his books and it was found that the amount stated had been embezzled.
The Manager, she said, made a complaint to the police and Gyamfi was later arrested at his hideout.
In his caution statement, he admitted the offence and after further investigations, he was charged.
