The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) swore in its executive council with a call on them to use their office to promote the development of the industry.
The executive council has Mr Alhassan Haruna, Deputy Managing Director of Accra-based Metropolitan Entertainment Television, as President and Chief Paul Crystal-Djirackor, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kumasi-based Crystal Television, as Vice President.
Other members of the executives are Mr James Appiah, CEO of Atlantis Radio, Nana Akwasi Agyeman, General Manager of Happy FM and Mr Charles van Dyck, Adom FM, all based in Accra.
Mr Bright Blewu, General Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), commended the owners and operators of broadcasting stations for their contribution to the development of the Ghanaian media.
He stated that the new executives had been ushered into office at a crucial time, as the country prepared to go to the polls and stressed the need for strong collaboration between the Association and the GJA to assist the media to perform better come December.
Mr Blewu said the GJA was reviewing its guidelines for election coverage to help the media perform effectively, adding that the support of the Association would be needed to make the guidelines work.
GJA, he said, would also meet the Association soon to discuss the inclusion of owners and operators of broadcasting stations as corporate members of the GJA.
Mr Blewu further charged the executives to work at getting Ghanaians to fully appreciate the contribution of the media to national development.
Mr Haruna said the executives would provide the needed leadership not only to move the Association forward, but also in ensuring that independent broadcasters played their roles effectively for free, fair and peaceful elections.
