The Vice-Chancellor of the Presbyterian University, Ghana (PUG), Professor John Ofosu-Anim, has asked fresh students to adopt critical thinking as a tool for developing impactful solutions to societal challenges.

Speaking at the matriculation ceremonies for fresh students held at the Akuapem and Asante Agogo campuses of the university, he reminded them that the world was changing rapidly, and success required a strong foundation of knowledge, ethics, and adaptability.

He therefore encouraged them to strive for excellence in their chosen programmes of study.

A total of 2,058 students have been admitted to pursue various programmes across the university’s five campuses for the 2025/26 academic year.

At the two matriculation ceremonies held last week, 60 students from the Akuapem and Tema campuses were matriculated at the Akuapem campus in Akropong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region, while 921 were admitted at the Asante Akyem campus at Agogo in the Ashanti Region.

At the Akuapem campus ceremony in the Eastern Region last Thursday, Prof. Ofosu-Anim urged the freshmen and women to embrace the responsibilities and opportunities that come with being part of the academic community.

He stated that while the start of an academic journey would inevitably present challenges, what mattered most was seizing opportunities for growth.

Describing PUG as the right place to study, the Vice-Chancellor explained that the university had a rich history of fostering intellectual curiosity and producing individuals who had gone on to make significant contributions to their respective fields.

“Take advantage of the diverse academic programmes, the wealth of resources at your disposal, and the guidance of our esteemed faculty members, who are not just teachers but mentors and guides in your academic journey,” he told the matriculants.

Responsibility

At Agogo, in the Ashanti Region, where students were admitted into the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Prof. Ofosu-Anim indicated that the field of health was noble and demanding, requiring not only intellect but also compassion, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility.

“Whether you are pursuing nursing, midwifery, or physician assistantship, strive for excellence, embrace critical thinking, and develop solutions that positively impact society,” he urged them.

He added: “The healthcare landscape is ever-evolving, shaped by societal changes and technological advancements.

“Your education at PUG is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and ethical foundation necessary to navigate these complexities and contribute meaningfully to your respective fields,” he assured the freshers.
