The Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has renewed calls for members of the legal profession to uphold the dignity of their calling by adhering to the highest standards of integrity and discipline.

Speaking at the induction ceremony for 376 new professional law students at the Kumasi Campus of the Ghana School of Law last Friday, February 13, 2026, the Chief Justice underscored that integrity and discipline form the bedrock of legal practice. He stressed that every practitioner must embody these values to sustain public confidence in the justice system.

According to him, the legal profession demands courage, commitment to ethical conduct, and unwavering respect for the rule of law, qualities essential to fulfilling the profession’s primary mandate of safeguarding fundamental rights and strengthening justice delivery.

Expectations

Addressing the newly inducted students, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie encouraged them to remain disciplined and to avoid distractions as they begin what he described as a rigorous and demanding professional training.

“You will be stretched intellectually and tested mentally.

The rigours of legal education are designed to prepare you, build discipline, and not discourage students,” he said.

He further assured the students that the General Legal Council (GLC) would not compromise on quality.

He reiterated the Council’s commitment to maintaining high professional standards across Ghana’s legal system.

The Chief Justice added that fairness would continue to guide the qualification processes, including measures such as re-tallying and remarking of examination scripts, which he said would be conducted diligently and within reasonable timelines.

Short cuts

The Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Kwame Owusu Sekyere, also addressed the inductees and emphasised that the legal profession is heavily governed by ethics and rules that every student must embrace to succeed.

“In law, there is nothing like rapid results. Results are not immediate,” he said.

Mr Owusu Sekyere advised the students to be patient, learn the principles of the profession thoroughly, and commit to steady growth to meet the expectations of the legal calling.
