THE Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to the proposed Gomoa Central Special Economic Zone, describing it as a project that fits squarely into Ghana’s 24-hour economy.
During a site visit to inspect the project on last Thursday, the Vice President said the initiative reflects government’s broader vision of industrialisation, export-led growth and value addition, with strong prospects for job creation.
The project is being promoted by the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng.
According to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, the Special Economic Zone has the potential to become a major industrial and logistics hub, supporting Ghana’s diversification efforts and positioning the country to take full advantage of regional trade opportunities.
“It aligns directly with our national priorities, industrialisation, the 24-hour economy policy, export drivers and diversification, including value addition. Government is fully committed to mobilising all relevant state institutions to support this initiative,” she assured.
She stressed, however, that government support must go beyond policy statements and translate into efficient action by public institutions.
The Vice President cautioned state agencies against bureaucratic delays that discourage investors, noting that such practices undermine national development efforts.
“No serious investor should face delays because of uncoordinated government action. We must put all of this behind us and move forward as a country,” she said.
She described the project as practical and achievable, adding that it would attract factories, warehouses, logistics centres, agro-processing facilities, technology hubs and export-oriented industries, with jobs following naturally from these developments.
On his part, the Gomoa Central MP, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, stated that the project is planned as a long-term development expected to be fully realised over the next 10 years.
He appealed to government institutions to offer the needed support to ensure its success.
“By 2036, this Zone will not be a dream. It will be a living reality.”
He expressed confidence that despite challenges along the way, the project team would remain committed to its completion.
“We will work 24 hours a day. We will fall, we will rise, and we would be here when the doubters are gone. And we will also be here when they come back to witness what can be achieved under the African Continental Free Trade Area and the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama,” he stated.
The Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area, Wamkele Mene, also commended the initiative, describing it as timely and relevant to Africa’s integration and trade ambitions.
