The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has held a high-level meeting with the President of the World Bank Group, Ajay Banga, to deepen ties and explore new avenues for advancing Ghana’s development goals.
The discussion, held on the sidelines of the 2025 IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington DC, last Tuesday, was focused on expanding support for existing World Bank–funded projects and introducing new initiatives to fast-track Ghana’s economic transformation.
During the meeting, Dr Forson and Mr Banga agreed to concentrate on five strategic sectors of the economy — education, health, energy, roads and agriculture — where enhanced World Bank assistance would deliver the greatest positive impact on national growth and citizens’ well-being.
The meeting sought to strengthen Ghana’s partnership with the World Bank, mobilise additional financing and align future projects with the government’s medium to long-term development priorities.
The minister was accompanied by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, and Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, underscoring the importance of the engagement to Ghana’s broader economic and diplomatic objectives.
Dr Forson explained that the identified priority areas were vital to Ghana’s medium to long-term development aspirations, as they directly supported the nation’s vision for sustained economic growth and social progress.
He said these sectors would form the foundation for deeper collaboration with the World Bank, helping to channel resources and expertise into programmes that drove impactful change.
He stressed that the renewed partnership underscored a shared commitment to build a more diversified and competitive economy capable of withstanding global shocks.
Dr Forson added that through this strengthened cooperation, Ghana aimed to accelerate its transition toward a resilient, inclusive and sustainable economy that improved livelihoods and promoted equitable development across all regions.
